Message From The President

On behalf of Zenshuji Soto Mission, the Board of Directors and Ministers, we would like to wish everyone a happy, healthy, and prosperous New Year. We are grateful for your participation this past year and hope you will join us in 2008 for many or our new activities.

We have enjoyed cultural guidance from our Issei and Nesei members, the temple routines from the ministers and the new ideas generated from the younger generation. Together we have made a team effort to bring us together in harmony. We have enjoyed learning from one another, socializing over potluck meals, communicating our needs and working hard toward the benefit for the future of the Temple.

Please feel free to join us anytime or stop by to say "hello" and just talk. Your presence is of tremendous importance to us and we will be looking forward to you and your family attending this coming year,

In Gassho,

Carolyn Abe Hashiba
President, Zenshuji Soto Mission

Election of Officers

You can help determine how Zenshuji operates by who the Membership elects. We hope to see you on Sunday, January 27th at 3:00pm for the General Membership Meeting and the election of the 2008 Board of Directors. A New Years Party will be held at 5:00pm directly following the meeting.

Dr. Kato Lecture Series

Dr. Kato's English lecture will be held on Sunday, January 13th, and his Japanese lecture will be held on Sunday, January 27th at 10:00am.

Sponsors and Tickets for Casino Night & Silent Auction

We are excited to announce that on Saturday, March 1st, 2008, Zenshuji will be holding the 1st Annual Casino Night & Silent Auction fundraiser. Proceeds from this event will be allocated to the parking structure fund as well as general operating expenses for 2008.

Much like our annual Obon Festival, temple members and friends will play an important role in making this fundraising event a success. There are several ways you or your company can support this charitable event. If you did not receive an information letter, sponsor and ticket order form in the most recently mailed Busshin (our monthly newsletter), the form will be available for download from this website soon.

Rohatsu Sesshin

Over twenty five people attended during various times of the Rohatsu Sesshin that was held from December 2nd to December 8th. This annual week long sesshin commemorates the practices, teachings, and enlightenment of The Buddha. Yuki and Rev. Kojima acted as tenzo; making all the meals for the entire week as well as sitting every session. A big thank you to them both for their hard work and to everyone who participated during this year's sesshin.

Congratulations to Lindsay and Wil Gillespie

A big congratulations to Zazenkai members Lindsay and Will Gillespie on the November 20th birth of their daughter, Tatiana. Congratulations to Natalia, the couple's older daughter, on now having a younger sister to pick on. A very nice holiday gift, indeed!

Our Mission

Zenshuji Soto Mission was founded in 1922 by Rev. Hosen Isobe on a second story flat to serve the growing Japanese American community of the Los Angeles Basin. Over the intervening years interest in Zen Buddhism, and Soto Zen in particular, has blossomed.

Open to all, we are dedicated to bringing the teachings of The Buddha as illuminated by the wisdom of Dogen Zenji to America. A family orientated practice Temple, Zenshuji is located in the busy heart of Los Angeles in the Little Tokyo/Artist district. We offer Zen Practice for the Lay practitioner in a uniquely Japanese style setting. Please join our practice; an oasis of calm in the midst of the fast pace of dense urban living.
